A plan to build a doughnut shaped office space large enough for 12,000 people has been presented to a City Council in California by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

The futuristic glass-fronted offices will include a cafe large enough to seat 3,000 staff members and run on power generated by an on-site energy centre. The space in the middle of the round structure will be used as a courtyard and the surrounding area of the 150-acre site will be heavily landscaped.

In an address to the Cupertino Council Steve Jobs said, “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world. I believe architecture students will come here to see this”. He continued: “It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed. There is not a straight piece of glass in this building. We’ve used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use – it’s pretty cool”.

In addition to the four-storey office space the plans also include an underground car park, auditorium and research and development centre. If plans are approved the offices will bring together almost 12,000 Apple employees who currently work in a number of disparate offices in the local Cupertino area.
